DOVER — Bolton Construction will play for the league title as they bested Civilworks New England 73-43 on Wednesday night. Both teams were without key players in this matchup, Gary Lytle for Bolton, and Jeff Barbour for Civilworks. For the building crew, it was the duo of Tom Vitko and Dave Hersey leading the way, scoring 16 points and 14 points, respectively in the first half. Bolton Construction led 17-12 with 8:10 to go. When Steve McCusker scored off a fast break six minutes later the lead was 31-15. Two Hersey 3 pointers made it 37-19. A Gary Mulkigian three from behind the arc for Civilworks made it 37-23 at the half.
From the 14-point halftime lead Bolton pushed it to 45-27 six minutes into the second frame. A Mike Casimiro hoop for Civilworks New England cut the lead to 13 at 45-32 two minutes later. But they never got any closer. Vitko scored a game high 32 on his way to a double-double (10 rebounds) for Bolton. Hersey had a season-high 19 points. For Civilworks New England, Matt Stith was the high scorer with 16 points followed by Gary Mulkigian with 11.
Bolton Construction gets a week off and waits to see who they will face in the finals.
Matt Langis hit 3 of 4 free throws down the stretch of the third overtime as RCC Construction (with just five players) outlasted Flynn Insurance 49-43 in a wild affair. His layup with 45 seconds remaining gave RCC a 45-41 lead and John Succi (game high 26 points) got fouled after a steal. His fee throw built the lead to five. Mark Shafer answered with a bucket to cut it to three, but Flynn’s only hope from there was to foul. Langis had the answer.
That overtime was set up by Flynn’s Phil Dupuis. His three point shot from the right side with just :06 left on the clock made it happen. Leading 41-38, RCC had a chance to seal the game, but Succi missed both free throws after getting fouled. He and Shafer exchanged baskets early in the 2nd OT after the teams were knotted 36-36.
All of it wouldn’t have been possible without Flynn’s duo of Kent Anson and Jason Conway, who scored all of Flynn Insurance’s second half points.
In fact, Flynn Insurance led 29-24 at the 7:45 mark. But a scoring drought over the next seven minutes let RCC Construction regain the lead. Kevin Boyle threw one in from deep and it was 32-29 RCC with just over four minutes to play. RCC then missed some free throws over the next couple minutes setting the stage for a Jason Conway three from the top of the key to send the game into extra sessions.
Conway led Flynn Insurance with a team high 14 and Anson added 11 points. Succi’s 26 paced RCC Construction as Langis (11) and Boyle (10) also contributed to the win.
RCC Construction faces Civilworks New England this week. The loser will play golf for the summer. The winner tees it up against Bolton Construction the following week.
